This report presents the results obtained during the BIGORNO project whose main objective is to overcome knowledge gaps on the biocenoses of the southern sub-region "Bay of Biscay" to propose a sampling protocol adapted to biogeographic and environmental specific conditions. A stratified random sampling design considering spatial heterogeneity has been implemented. Biodiversity was considered on 0.1 m²quadrats. These data have revealed the organization of benthic communities and the relevant taxa to be considered (species or assemblages of indicator species) in the context of establishing perennial monitoring of intertidal habitats. Proposals are made to implement the descriptors and indicators defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

Body orientation for thermoregulation and daily activity cycle of Mabuya macrorhyncha (Squamata: Scincidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Maia-Carneiro,Thiago; Winck,Gisele R.; Pereira,Mariana Rodrigues; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
ABSTRACT We investigated the daily activity and thermoregulatory body orientation of Mabuya macrorhyncha (Hoge, 1947), a lizard species that occurs in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We conducted this investigation in a sandy coastal dune remnant (“restinga” ecosystem) in Grussaí, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the summer. The daily activity cycle of the lizards started around 6:00 am and ended before 7:00 pm. This is longer than observed in other populations of M. macrorhyncha (approximately 7:00 am to 5:00 pm). The activity cycle of the lizards was bimodal, with the first peak between 6:00 and 11:00 am and the second from 2:00 to 7:00 pm. This contrasts with observations on other populations of this species, which revealed an unimodal pattern....

Bryophyte richness of soil islands on rocky outcrops is not driven by island size or habitat heterogeneity Acta Botanica
Silva,Joan Bruno; Sfair,Julia Caram; Santos,Nivea Dias dos; Pôrto,Kátia Cavalcanti.
ABSTRACT The species-area relationship (SAR) is one of the oldest and most studied ecological models, having even served as the foundation of the Theory of Island Biogeography. Nevertheless, the relative importance of habitat heterogeneity to SAR remains poorly understood. Our aim was to test the relative importance of habitat heterogeneity to the SAR of bryophyte assemblages of soil islands of rocky outcrops in the semi-arid region of Brazil. We randomly selected 15 to 20 soil islands on each of four outcrops for a total of 59 soil islands, and calculated the area, mean depth, and number of substrates for each. We used Generalized Linear Models (GLM) to test the SAR with two models, one using species richness and another using life-form richness as the...

A new species, Tisbe dahmsi sp. nov. (Crustacea, Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Tisbidae) is described from the Eiffel Tower edifice located in the Lucky Strike vent field (37 degrees N) (Mid-Atlantic Ridge MAR, 1698 m). The samples were collected in colonization experiments (SMAC arrays) that were deployed in 1997 during the MARVEL cruise and recovered in 1998 during the PICO cruise. Other specimens were collected during the MoMARETO cruise during which a physico-chemical characterization of copepod microhabitats was done. The new species belongs to the T. gracilis group based on similarities of the spine-like inner seta on the proximal endopodal segment of the male second swimming leg, which is terminally bifurcate. Re-examination of the closest relative and...

DIET OF DENDROPSOPHUS MICROCEPHALUS AND SCARTHYLA VIGILANS (ANURA: HYLIDAE) AT A LOCALITY IN NORTH-WESTERN VENEZUELA WITH NOTES ON MICROHABITAT OCCUPATION Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
FONSECA-PÉREZ,KIMBERLYN A.; MOLINA,CÉSAR; TÁRANO,ZAIDA.
ABSTRACT The coexistence of species with similar ecological requirements (food, space, time) has typically drawn attention of researchers because competition for resources is expected to be high. The diet and microhabitat occupation of two morphologically and ecologically similar species of Hylidae (Anura), Dendropsophus microcephalus and Scarthyla vigilans, were analyzed at a locality in north-western Venezuela, with the aim of addressing the potential for space and food competition between them. Diet was estimated through the analysis of stomach contents and microhabitat occupation was estimated through recordings of perch type, height and horizontal distance to water. Thirty-six prey categories (32 families, 4 orders) of arthropods were identified: 30...

Ecological relations between mangrove leaf litter and the spatial distribution of the gastropod Melampus coffeus in a fringe mangrove forest Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Tavares,Diva S.; Maia,Rafaela C.; Rocha-Barreira,Cristina; Matthews-Cascon,Helena.
Leaf litter represents a food source to many organisms that may directly contribute to organic matter decomposition. In addition, the physical presence of these vegetal detritus contributes for the modification of some environmental areas and produce microhabitats that may act as a refuge against predators and desiccation for many animals. The pulmonate gastropod Melampus coffeus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Ellobiidae) is a very common specie in Atlantic Coast mangrove forests and feeds on fallen mangrove leaves. It was hypothesized that the spatial distribution of Melampus coffeus is directly affected by mangrove leaf litter biomass deposition. Thus, this research aimed at evaluating the spatial distribution of these gastropods in relation to the biomass of...

Electivities and resource use by an assemblage of lizards endemic to the dunes of the São Francisco River, northeastern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Rocha,Pedro L.B.; Rodrigues,Miguel T..
This study describes the pattern of resource use by one assemblage of lizards inhabiting a desert-like dune field in the Brazilian Caatinga. We evaluated food and microhabitat availability and phases of lizard activity, as well as use of, and electivities for, food and microhabitats. Six of the seven most abundant species are endemic to the dunes, and their diets under-represented arthropods possessing chemical defenses. The two fossorial gymnophthalmids were similar in presenting no electivities for microhabitat but differed in diet, electivities for food and phase of activity. The five species of epigeous lizards include one group presenting positive electivities for protected and shaded microhabitats (Procellosaurinus erythrocercus, Briba brasiliana,...

Exposure to solar radiation drives organismal vulnerability to climate: evidence from an intertidal limpet ArchiMer
Chapperon, Coraline; Volkenborn, Nils; Clavier, Jacques; Seite, Sarah; Seabra, Rui; Lima, Fernando P..
Understanding the physiological abilities of organisms to cope with heat stress is critical for predictions of species’ distributions in response to climate change. We investigated physiological responses (respiration and heart beat rate) of the ectotherm limpet Patella vulgata to heat stress events during emersion and the role of seasonal and microclimatic acclimatization for individual thermal tolerance limits. Individuals were collected from 5 microhabitats characterized by different exposure to solar radiation in the high intertidal zone of a semi-exposed rocky shore in winter and summer of 2014. Upper thermal tolerance limits (heat coma temperatures - HCTs, and heart rate Arrhenius break temperatures - ABTs) were determined for individuals from each...

Hydrothermal faunal assemblages and habitat characterisation at the Eiffel Tower edifice (Lucky Strike, Mid-Atlantic Ridge) ArchiMer
Cuvelier, Daphne; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee; Colaco, Ana; Copley, Jon T.; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Glover, Adrian G.; Santos, Ricardo Serrao; Tyler, Paul A..
The Eiffel Tower edifice is situated in the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field at a mean depth of 1690 m on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). At this 11-m-high hydrothermal structure, different faunal assemblages, varying in visibly dominant species (mussels and shrimp), in mussel size and in density of mussel coverage, were sampled biologically and chemically. Temperature and sulphide (Sigma S) were measured on the different types of mussel-based assemblages and on a shrimp-dominated assemblage. Temperature was used as a proxy for calculating total concentrations of CH4. Based on the physico-chemical measurements, two microhabitats were identified, corresponding to (i) a more variable habitat featuring the greatest fluctuations in environmental variables...

Influence of structural habitat use on the thermal ecology of Gonatodes humeralis (Squamata: Gekkonidae) from a transitional forest in Maranhão, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Miranda,Jivanildo P.; Ricci-Lobão,Andréa; Rocha,Carlos Frederico D..
We studied the structural habitat use and the thermal ecology of Gonatodes humeralis (Guichenot, 1855) in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, to examine intersexual differences in the use of perch features and to simultaneously analyze reciprocal differences on thermal ecology between the sexes. Gonatodes humeralis body temperature was strongly correlated with environmental temperatures (air and substrate), but air temperature had an additional effect on the males' body temperatures after removing the effect of the substrate temperature. Males and females differed significantly in perch height use above ground (males perched higher) but the sexes did not differ in the trunk perimeter used. Gonatodes humeralis tended to use the larger tree trunks available in its...

Intertidal life: field observations on the clingfish Gobiesox barbatulus in southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pires,Tiago H. S; Gibran,Fernando Z.
The clingfish Gobiesox barbatulus shows nocturnal feeding activity, spending most part of the day stationary and adhered to the inferior part of stones. To feed, this species uses the sit-and-wait and particulate feeding tactics. It shows a carnivorous feeding habit mostly consuming small benthic crustaceans. It can move in two ways: (1) "stone-by-stone", sliding its ventral sucker disc across each stone and (2) "surf", when it takes advantage of the energy of the ebbing tide to quickly cross a distance up to four times its body length. Its reproductive season occurs between the end of spring and the beginning of summer, during which time it lays about 2,000 adhesive eggs of 1 mm each in a single layer under stones. It has more than one egg-laying session...

Living in a caatinga-rocky field transitional habitat: ecological aspects of the whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus ocellifer (Teiidae) in northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Menezes,Vanderlaine A; Sluys,Monique Van; Fontes,Angélica F; Rocha,Carlos F. D.
The ecology of the active forager lizard Cnemidophorus ocellifer (Spix, 1825) was studied to analyze food habits, thermal ecology and habitat use, in the Morro do Chapéu municipality (11º29'S, 41º07'W), state of Bahia, Brazil. Lizards (N = 34) were collected with rubber bands or with an air rifle and, for each individual, we recorded cloacal temperature (Tc), air temperature (Ta) (1 cm above the substrate) and substrate temperature (Ts) (to nearest 0.2ºC). We registered the microhabitat used by each animal at the moment of first sight and measured its morphological variables (nearest 0.1 mm). In the laboratory, we registered the number of items of each prey category to the taxonomic level of Order, its dimensions and frequencies. Data showed that,...

Living (stained) benthic foraminifera from the Mozambique Channel (eastern Africa): Exploring ecology of deep-sea unicellular meiofauna ArchiMer
Fontanier, Christophe; Garnier, Eline; Brandily, Christophe; Dennielou, Bernard; Bichon, S.; Gayet, Nicolas; Eugene, Thibaut; Rovere, Mickael; Gremare, A.; Deflandre, B..
Live (Rose-Bengal stained) deep-sea foraminiferal faunas have been studied at four stations between 530–3200-m depth in the Mozambique Channel (eastern Africa) to understand how complex environmental conditions (e.g., organic matter, oxygenation) control their ecological structure (i.e., diversity, density, and microhabitats). Two upper-slope stations, located at 530- and 780-m depth off Madagascar, are bathed by well-oxygenated bottom waters. They are characterized by fine sediments enriched in highly degraded organic matter (low amino-acid bio-availability and reduced chlorophyllic freshness). Mineralization of organic compounds results in relatively moderate oxygen penetration depth (i.e., 15 and 30 mm) in sediment. Interestingly, foraminiferal species...

Natural History of Pseudoboine Snakes Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Gaiarsa,Marília P.; Alencar,Laura R.V. de; Martins,Marcio.
Even though natural history information is crucial for answering key ecological, evolutionary, and conservation questions, basic studies are still lacking for Neotropical snakes. This study aims at contributing to the knowledge of the Neotropical tribe Pseudoboini, based on literature data, analysis of museum specimens and unpublished data. The tribe is mainly composed of moderate-sized snakes, although small and large-sized snakes also occur in the clade. Mean fecundity ranged from two (Rodriguesophis iglesiasi) to 29 eggs (Clelia plumbea) and the species are predominantly terrestrial and nocturnal. Most species are diet specialists and lizards are the most commonly consumed prey (found in the diet of 29 species), followed by small mammals (consumed by 20...
